On September 19th, 1996 the Ottawa Declaration was signed by all eight states with territories north of the Arctic Circle, creating the Arctic Council. Over the past 25 years the Arctic Council has grown in its capacity and in its influence, producing three legally binding agreements, 10 declarations, and countless reports from its six working groups and network of experts. It has also been essential in creating the University of the Arctic, the Arctic Economic Council, the Arctic Coast Guard Forum, and many other cooperation mechanisms.

This video features commentary from a host of key figures throughout the Arctic Council’s history, reflecting on past achievements and the potential future of the Arctic’s premier forum for international cooperation.
