Ericsson, one of the world’s leading information and communication technology companies, and Luleå University of Technology have entered a partnership agreement for long-term and strategic competence provisioning. The parties will collaborate within education, research and innovation, with the objective to disseminate and make research results available and useful through commercialization.

“It is important to us that we now, through the partnership agreement, strengthen our collaboration with Ericsson within education, research and innovation. Throughout the years, we have achieved significant results within, for instance, telecommunication. Obviously, it is important for our university’s attractiveness in the international perspective that we have close and extended collaboration with a world-leading company like Ericsson”, says Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, Vice-Chancellor of the Luleå University of Technology.

In the forefront in 2G-5G and 6G mobile technologies

Ericsson is one of the world’s leading providers of technology and services to telecom operators. The Ericsson group operates in 180 countries and employs more than 100,000 people, and is in the forefront in 2G-5G and 6G mobile technologies. Ericsson focuses on artificial intelligence and machine learning within a broad range of areas, for example, increasing capacity in communications networks, efficient control and operation of digital systems, advanced media services and solutions, and management of resources in data centers.

Already in the mid-1990s, collaboration between Luleå University of Technology and Ericsson was initiated, arising from the mobile telephony development to overcome distances, something that always has been a challenge to a large country like Sweden. The Centre for distance-spanning technology at Luleå University of Technology was established in collaboration with Ericsson and has over the years achieved research results that have given birth to new products and services. The new collaboration further strengthens the research, as well as the competitiveness of Ericsson.

Ericsson and Luleå University of Technology will collaborate within education, research and innovation, with the objective to disseminate and make research results available and useful through commercialization.

Successful collaboration

“Ericsson has collaborated successfully with Luleå University of Technology for a long time and with this agreement we are formalizing it further. With its long tradition of applied research, Luleå University of Technology has shown that they can successfully lead large international research projects where industry, academia and users jointly create world-class results while educating students to high levels of competence in areas relevant for us”, says Magnus Frodigh, Vice-President and Head of Ericsson Research.

Within the partnership agreement, Ericsson will support and provide resources for joint projects, make available Ericsson’s competence within the ICT area to Luleå University of Technology, provide opportunity for personnel exchange with Luleå University of Technology, and support mutually beneficial international collaboration activities. As a challenge-driven university, Luleå University of Technology welcomes Ericsson as a long-term strategic collaborative partner in ambition of the University to contribute to global sustainable public benefits.
