“The biggest opportunity we see is within the maritime shipping industry” — Christian Berg

Amogy is a technology company that offers ammonia-based, emission-free, high energy-density power solutions to decarbonize transportation for a sustainable future. The company has been making waves in the transportation industry since its launch in 2020.

In March 2023, Amogy secured $139 million in a Series B-1 funding round, which was led by SK Innovation, and included other global investors such as Temasek, Korea Zinc, Aramco Ventures, AP Ventures, MOL PLUS, Yanmar Ventures, Zeon Ventures and DCVC. Previous investors include Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund. This funding will enable Amogy to continue its organizational development to support commercialization and begin manufacturing its innovative ammonia-to-power technology.

With targeted efforts, Amogy has demonstrated its ammonia technology on a drone, tractor, and semi-truck. Now they set their sights on tugboat demonstration and commercialization in 2024!

We reached out to Christian Berg, Managing Director at Amogy Norway, for a chat about the future.

What is Amogy’s primary focus right now?

Right now, our biggest priority is to reach commercialization, explains Berg.

We’ve worked hard to develop, scale, and prove our technology and the next step is to deliver it to customers. Over the past few years, we’ve demonstrated our technology in a drone, tractor, and semi-truck. Later this year, we will demonstrate our technology in the first ammonia-powered, zero-emission tugboat. That demonstration will lead us to commercialization in 2024 and we’re very excited to see our technology used by customers.

What are the biggest challenges and opportunities for Amogy in the future?

The biggest opportunity we see is within the maritime shipping industry. Ammonia has already been traded and shipped for decades, which means there is existing infrastructure for its storage and transport. Countries such as Norway have regulations and policies that encourage the transition to clean energy, which creates great opportunities for companies such as Amogy.

As far as challenges, education is an obstacle. We have to educate the world about the potential of ammonia as a fuel, establishing that it’s safe and that it can be a zero-carbon fuel for maritime applications. Thankfully, the industry has shown interest in learning about clean energy solutions and we’re excited to continue to have these conversations.

How can hydrogen be a part of the solution for the future?

At Amogy, we have developed a compact, high-efficiency chemical reactor to split ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen. This reactor system comes equipped with a high-activity catalyst, allowing the reaction and ammonia cracking process to take place at higher efficiency levels and lower operating than alternative designs. The hydrogen is then used to generate power through a fuel cell. This proprietary design leverages the superior physical characteristics of liquid ammonia with the performance advantages of hydrogen.

We believe our solution can enable the decarbonization of the maritime shipping industry and beyond.

What is your primary focus when it comes to sustainability?

Amogy’s focus is to accelerate the global journey to Net Zero by providing a solution to decarbonize the maritime shipping industry, heavy duty transportation, and heavy industry. The maritime industry has a notoriously large carbon footprint and we’re very excited to be a part of the solution for this hard-to-abate sector. Through our continued work of scaling our ammonia-to-power technology, and working closely with partners in the industry, we see a clear path to net zero emissions in the future.

Why did you decide on becoming a member of Ocean Hyway Cluster?

We were thrilled to join the Ocean Hyway Cluster, which allows us to build relationships with other members across the hydrogen value chain. In particular, the ability to share knowledge, ideas, and insights is very important as we near commercialization, Berg concludes.
