Press release from AFRY

Stena Recycling in Halmstad, Sweden.

Front-end engineering work to recycle and reuse electrical and green technology.

Stena Recycling has invested in a new battery recycling process with AFRY engineers designing crucial components. The project aims to address the growing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions for used lithium-ion car batteries.

AFRY engineers contributed to forming the initial phase of the battery recycling process, designing crucial components such as the lifting table, transport wagon, and de-charging stations. The new recycling plant has an initial yearly recycling capacity of 10,000 tons and can handle a throughput of 2 tons per hour from any car manufacturer while prioritizing health and safety.

“The recycling plant’s establishment is a significant step towards addressing the demand for a sustainable and environmentally friendly recycling process for used batteries, which is crucial for the growing use of electric cars. We are proud to be part of an initiative that helps expedite the transition to a more sustainable future,” says Jörgen Simonsson, Business Unit Manager Product & Software Engineering at AFRY.

The complete system set up by AFRY and Stena Recycling will create a circular economy, extracting maximum value from resources while in use and regenerating products and materials at the end of their service life.

“The electrification of society has only just begun, and we want to boost a circular approach to battery production,” says Kristofer SundsgÃ¥rd, President and CEO of Stena Metall Group.

The grand opening ceremony for the recycling plant was held on March 29th, 2023, in Halmstad, Sweden. Stena Recycling is planning to replicate the solution domestically and internationally, with AFRY’s continued support in promoting the green transition.
