Watch The Strait Guys documentary for free

Rick Minnich’s 2022 documentary “The Strait Guys” follows Czech-born mining engineer George Koumal and his Alaskan partner Joe Henri as they spend decades pushing a Bering Strait tunnel and the broader InterContinental Railway linking Alaska and Siberia. The film tracks their Capitol-Hill pitches and visits with Alaska Native communities in Wales and Little Diomede—where residents weigh development against subsistence life—alongside scenes from Russia’s Yakutia railhead near Nizhny Bestyakh. With recent chatter from financier Kirill Dmitriev (and even nods to The Boring Company), the old dream flickers back to life, but the heart of the film is the people who kept it alive.
As a kind of weekend treat, Minnich has allowed us to share the documentary with our readers.
