As commercial vehicles increasingly run on electrified solutions, reducing the emissions when the product is in use, the environmental footprint from the supply network and production becomes increasingly important. Since steel is one of the main input materials in the manufacturing of trucks, buses and construction machines, a shift towards green steel is a vital element for Volvo Group’s continued journey towards decarbonization.

“Collaborations which support our work to reduce emissions are crucial on the path towards net zero. Steel is a big contributor to the footprint of our products, and working together with both established and new players for developing decarbonized materials is key to advancing our progress in sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions”, says Andrea Fuder, Chief Purchasing Officer of Volvo Group.

The long-term supply agreement placed from Volvo Group is for green steel from H2 Green Steel’s new plant in Boden in Northern Sweden. Start of production is planned for end of 2025. Deliveries to Volvo Group will start mid-2026.

“The commercial vehicle industry has actively been driving the demand for green steel, validating the market interest. When an undeniable large player like Volvo Group, working at the forefront of sustainable change, places a customer order it’s a clear sign of confidence in both our company and our product,” says Henrik Henriksson, H2 Green Steel’s CEO.

Talga’s planned factory in Luleå, where materials for battery anodes will be manufactured from graphite mined in a mine in Vittangi.

So far, known green transition initiatives are estimated to create close to 50,000 new jobs. A large proportion in northern Sweden.

The calculations show that the green transition initiatives planned so far in battery manufacturing would generate a total of just over 28,000 new jobs. In the mining industry, an increase of almost 12,000 new jobs is estimated. The car industry’s so far planned investments in electric cars could create nearly 9,000 new jobs. In total, the industry would create almost 50,000 new jobs, which is significantly more than previous estimates.

The industry organization Teknikföretagen’s new forecast includes both direct and indirect employment.

“The estimate must nevertheless be seen as an underestimate. This does not include the additional jobs that could be created by more investments in the green transition in Sweden, such as in the extraction of critical minerals,” says Mats Kinnwall, chief economist at Teknikföretagen.

The new report is made by Industriekonomerna, a joint group of economists from Teknikföretagen and Industriarbetsgivarna.

🇫🇮 VALMET AUTOMOTIVE AGAIN RANKED WITHIN THE TOP 100 GLOBAL AUTOMOTIVE SUPPLIERS

July 27, 2023

Press release from Valmet Automotive Valmet Automotive is placed again among the world’s 100 largest automotive suppliers despite the planned end of production of an important car model and an associated significant decline in sales in the Vehicle Contract Manufacturing (VCM) business line. Press release from Valmet Automotive

Valmet Automotive is placed again among the world’s 100 largest automotive suppliers despite the planned end of production of an important car model and an associated significant decline in sales in the Vehicle Contract Manufacturing (VCM) business line. The now published “Top 100: Automotive Suppliers Global Ranking 2023”, is compiled annually by the German automotive special interest magazine “Automobil Produktion” in cooperation with the consultancy Roland Berger.

Compared to last year, Valmet Automotive has lost 14 places and is now in 100th place. This comes not as a surprise. The performance is mainly due to the scheduled end of production of the Mercedes-Benz GLC in mid-2022. The model, which was produced at the Uusikaupunki plant alongside with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, has been an important sales driver for the Vehicle Contract Manufacturing (VCM) business line for years.

But, weaker sales in car manufacturing were largely offset by the rapid and strong growth in the EV Systems division. In 2022, Valmet Automotive for the first time had achieved 1 billion euros in sales of battery systems. End of June the company opened its third battery plant in Kirchardt near Heilbronn, and two important battery programs for customers will start later this year.

Since the start of production of Valmet Automotive’s first battery plant in Salo, Finland, in 2019, the company has now manufactured more than 1.8 million battery systems, making it one of the leading suppliers in Europe. In the Roof & Kinematic Systems division, solutions for electromobility such as innovative charging flaps and active spoilers have become a strong growth driver.

To strengthen its position as a leading passenger car contract manufacturer, a few months ago the company in Uusikaupunki opened its new innovation center. This is where solutions for the automotive production of the future are developed and tested.

  • We are pleased that, despite considerable external and internal challenges, we have once again made it into the top 100 of the world’s largest automotive suppliers. The result reflects the strong position that Valmet Automotive now gained as a leading supplier for electric mobility, says Christian Kleinhans, Senior Vice President Business Development, Valmet Automotive Group.
