🇸🇪 Ecohelix secures €2.2 million EU LIFE funding to accelerate market entry of WOODMER seal biopolymer

We’re thrilled to share that Ecohelix has been granted €2.2 million in funding from the prestigious European Union’s LIFE Programme (LIFE-2024-SAP-ENV call) for our pioneering LIFE WOODMER project! This significant funding enables Ecohelix to bring novel heat seal coating to the market by adding formulation capability to Ecohelix demo production.

The LIFE WOODMER project (Demonstration of high performing, wood-based biopolymers, that valorises neglected pulp industry side streams and can replace fossil- and food-based polymers including hazardous PFAS chemicals) will run for 36 months, starting in June. Our goal is to showcase the industrial viability of producing WOODMER® Seal for packaging applications, particularly as a replacement for unsustainable fossil-based polymers and harmful PFAS in heat seal coatings.

This project marks a crucial step in realizing our vision of a circular bioeconomy. By utilizing neglected side streams from the pulp industry, we are creating high-value, high-performance biopolymers that contribute to waste reduction, lower CO2 emissions, and a more sustainable future. WOODMER® is a novel, patented polymer that is both safe for human consumption and locally abundant in the EU.

We are excited to collaborate with three key European commercial partners from Sweden, Italy, and Finland on this journey. This collaborative approach will be vital for the future replication and scaling of our technology across Europe and beyond.

This EU LIFE funding underscores the potential of Ecohelix’s technology to address critical sustainability challenges and aligns perfectly with the EU Green Deal’s objectives. We look forward to sharing our progress and achievements as the LIFE WOODMER project unfolds.

This project has received funding from the EU LIFE Programme under grant agreement 10124612. Co-funded by the European Union.
