Fortum and the City of Kemi have signed a planning reservation agreement under which Fortum will develop and market an area in Ajos, Kemi, for the construction of a hydrogen and/or hydrogen derivatives production plant. The actual plant investment will be made by the project developer. The area covers approximately 17 hectares and is located in the western part of the island of Ajos.

“Promoting new industry is a challenging process. Municipalities need partners. Fortum has a strong track record, resources, and expertise in developing investments in clean transition industry. Once implemented, the project will bring new jobs to the region, increase tax revenues, and create long-term vitality,” says Kimmo Heikka, Director of Vitality.

“The Ajos area has excellent conditions for a hydrogen project. The proximity of the Port of Kemi ensures logistical efficiency, and the area is already a ready-made, zoned industrial environment. In addition, bio-based carbon dioxide is available in the Kemi region, which opens up opportunities for the production of synthetic fuels and other hydrogen derivatives. These factors make the area a very attractive investment destination for hydrogen operators,” says Jyrki Holappa, Fortum’s Director of Industrial Area Development.

In line with its strategy, Fortum aims to use this development project to create new growth based on low-emission electricity production.
