🇩🇰 Chromologics raises €7 million to bring its natural colour ingredients closer to market

Chromologics, a Danish biotech company developing fermentation-based natural colours, has raised €7 million (approximately USD 7.6 million and ISK 1.0 billion) from Novo Holdings, EIFO (the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark), Döhler Ventures, Collateral Good Ventures and Synergetic, bringing its total capital raised to almost €20 million.
The funding will enable Chromologics to complete regulatory submissions for its natural food colour Natu.Red® with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It will also support product launch and the scale-up of production together with a large-scale CMO partner that provides access to high-capacity fermentation facilities.
Chromologics, a spin-out from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), has been backed by Novo Holdings and EIFO since 2020 based on a shared conviction in the market potential of fermentation-derived natural colours. The company says its Natu.Red® ingredient offers a high-performing, heat- and pH-stable solution suitable for vegan diets and based on a stable supply chain that is independent of seasonal production cycles and geography.
The company argues that fermented natural colours are more sustainable than those extracted from fruits and vegetables, requiring less land, water and agricultural inputs, while providing consistent quality. Over the past four years, Chromologics has conducted trials with more than 90 food manufacturers across Europe and the United States to validate performance and application potential for Natu.Red®.
With the new funding, Chromologics plans to advance regulatory milestones, prepare for commercial launch and continue scaling its fermentation platform for natural colours. The company positions itself as part of the green transition in food production, offering alternatives to synthetic colourants such as Red 3 and helping manufacturers respond to tightening regulation and growing demand for natural ingredients.
Founded in 2017, Chromologics is a Danish biotech company that has developed a precision fermentation platform for the production of natural food colours. Its proprietary process is designed to deliver sustainable, scalable and cost-effective colours compatible with a wide range of dietary requirements, including kosher, halal and vegan.
