🇫🇮 AFRY to study options for new nuclear energy in Finland

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland has commissioned AFRY to conduct a comprehensive study on the options and implementation methods for new nuclear energy in Finland.
The study, carried out by AFRY Management Consulting, will examine various nuclear energy investment options. These include the use of small modular reactors (SMRs) for heat and power generation, the construction of large-scale nuclear power plants, and power upgrades to existing facilities. It will assess the economic viability, technical feasibility, and market impact of these options, and potential support mechanisms to enable the investments.
The assignment aims to provide clear information on the costs, risks, and impacts of nuclear power investments and potential support mechanisms for the state, electricity consumers, and electricity market. It will also consider EU electricity market regulations and previous state aid decisions to ensure that any proposed support measures are acceptable to the European Commission.
“The government of Finland has an ambitious plan to multiply electricity production and strengthen the country’s energy self-sufficiency. Availability of clean and reliable energy is also crucial for attracting new industrial investments to Finland. We are delighted to have the opportunity to support the government in assessing the need and possibilities for promoting nuclear energy in the country,” says Jenni Patronen, Director, Head of Management Consulting Finland.
Finland currently operates five nuclear reactors for electricity generation, which produce approximately 40% of the electricity produced in the country. Nuclear power plays a vital role in Finland’s energy and climate strategy by providing carbon-neutral electricity at a stable price with high security of supply.
The study is scheduled for completion early next year.
