🇨🇦 New Taloyoak sea ice terminology book celebrates Inuit knowledge and promotes ice safety

May 21, 2025
Taloyoak, NU — The Taloyoak Umaruliririgut Association Committee is proud to announce the release of the Taloyoak Sea Ice Terminology book, a valuable new resource rooted in Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit. Co-designed by Sandra Aqqaq (Knowledge Co-Production Coordinator for SmartICE in Taloyoak) and the local Umaruliririgut Committee, the book highlights and preserves critical sea ice terminology in the Nattilik dialect of Inuktitut.
The book contains over 98 sea ice and wind terms, gathered to support the passing down of Inuit knowledge and promote safe ice travel. These terms reflect generations of Inuit expertise and are now captured in print with accompanying photos and illustrations to educate and protect current and future community members.
Free copies of the booklet will be available for pick-up at the Taloyoak Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO) Office on:
- Wednesday, May 21 and Thursday, May 22 from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM each day
Community members are encouraged to stop by, meet Sandra Aqqaq, and learn more about the booklet and its importance to the community.
This booklet has been made possible through the work of the Taloyoak Umaruliririgut Association Committee, which has managed SmartICE operations in the community since 2023.
