Weekend Video: Inside Agnico Eagle’s $2.4 billion bet on the Kitikmeot
This week’s Weekend Video comes from the season finale of The Arctic Edge, a series that takes viewers into the people, projects, and policy decisions shaping the Canadian North. Hosted by Hannah Thibedeau, the show has spent the season tracking the players and communities driving development across the Arctic and it closes out with a trip to Nunavut’s Kitikmeot region, 125 kilometres southwest of Cambridge Bay, as Agnico Eagle unveils a US$2.4 billion investment in the next phase of its Hope Bay project.
The episode uses Hope Bay as a case study in what long-term northern investment can look like: not a template to be copied wholesale, but evidence of what’s possible when relationships are built early and sustained on trust over years, not quarters. Thibedeau speaks with Agnico Eagle’s Sean Boyd and Ammar Al-Joundi, Nunavut Affairs director Alex Buchan, federal Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, Nunavut Premier John Main, and MP Lori Idlout, alongside Hope Bay employees Johnny Nikhaktok Avakok, Quentin Crockatt, and Jonny Toft, whose voices ground the policy conversation in the day-to-day work of building a mine in the Arctic.
