Weekend Video: A Sámi reindeer herder’s life in the tundra

By Elías Thorsson May 15, 2026

Spring is the busiest season in the Sámi calendar. The reindeer calves are being born now, the herds are on the move to their summer pastures, and a way of life that has shaped the European Arctic for thousands of years swings into its loudest months of the year.

This short film from Visit Norway is a quieter counterpoint to all that motion. Karen Anna, eighty-three, has spent her entire life herding reindeer in the Norwegian tundra. She sits down and tells you about it: the land, the animals, the work, the long winters under the northern lights.
