🇫🇮 Panu Routila appointed chairman of the board of Kuva Space
Espoo, Finland – April 9, 2026
Finnish space technology company Kuva Space has appointed Panu Routila as Chairman of its Board of Directors. The appointment comes at a time when demand for independent space-based data and dual-use technologies is growing across Europe. The previous Chairman, Inka Mero, representing the company’s largest shareholder Voima Ventures, will continue as a board member.
Routila brings exceptional experience from global heavy industry and the defence sector. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Patria, a Finnish state-owned defence and technology company, and has previously led Konecranes and the Finnish family-owned investment company Ahlström Capital. His appointment as Chairman strengthens Kuva Space’s position in strategically important markets where scalability and operational credibility are key.
“Demand for dual-use technology and space-based defence technology is currently growing strongly, and Kuva Space has an exceptional opportunity to meet these needs. Routila’s diverse background across industries and his experience in board work make him an excellent choice as Chairman as Kuva Space strengthens its role in European dual-use technology and independent space technology. Kuva Space is celebrating its tenth anniversary and moving into a more ambitious growth phase, where success depends not only on technological expertise but also on the ability to operate strategically in key markets,” says outgoing Chairman and CEO of Voima Ventures, Inka Mero.
Kuva Space is building a hyperspectral satellite constellation and an AI-based analytics platform designed to provide near real-time, actionable intelligence for applications such as dark vessel detection, crop health monitoring, and carbon sequestration in oceans and coastal ecosystems. The company’s technology supports applications in security, environmental monitoring, maritime situational awareness, agriculture, and other sectors where rapid, high-quality data improves strategic and operational decision-making.
“Space technology and AI-based analytics are becoming a strong part of strategic infrastructure. In the coming years, Europe will need more independent capabilities, and companies that can provide reliable, decision-ready data will play an increasingly important role. Kuva Space has the capabilities to bring space and AI technology solutions to market that meet these needs,” says Panu Routila, the new Chairman of Kuva Space’s Board.
“Kuva Space is building a constellation of over 100 satellites, enabling continuous and rapid data acquisition. Routila’s strong experience in the defence industry, extensive networks, and deep understanding of the changing geopolitical environment strongly support our strategy as a developer of defence and other strategically important technologies,” says Kuva Space CEO Jarkko Antila.
Founded in 2016, Kuva Space has raised €40 million in funding to date and aims to build a 100-satellite constellation by 2030.
