Greenland is poised to welcome a high-profile diplomatic guest this summer, as French President Emmanuel Macron is reportedly planning a visit to Nuuk, reports Sermitsiaq. The prospective trip follows an official invitation extended by Greenland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt, during her visit to Paris in May.

Motzfeldt’s visit to France was, in part, to express gratitude for the country’s support amid significant pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this year. At the time, France signaled its willingness to deploy troops to Greenland if the Kingdom of Denmark requested it, in order to help resist U.S. political pressure.

While the French government has received the invitation positively, specific details regarding President Macron’s travel plans remain unconfirmed. Motzfeldt told Sermitsiaq that the invitation was very well received.

The visit is still in the planning phase and an official announcement has yet to be made. As such, the trip could still be postponed or canceled.

Earlier this year, amid escalating tensions with the United States over Greenland, during a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Paris, Macron expressed France’s readiness to deploy troops to Greenland if requested, as a show of solidarity against U.S. pressure. This offer was part of a broader European initiative to reinforce Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and counteract President Trump’s expressed interest in acquiring the territory.
