Berlin (dpa) – Member associations of the confederation for North and central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) have unanimously rejected Greenland‘s membership application, the body said in a statement on Monday.

CONCACAF, however, didn’t explain why the application submitted by the Greenlandic Football Association was rejected.

Greenland, which has caught the interest of United States President Donald Trump, is geographically part of the American continent, but politically an autonomous territory of Denmark, like the Faroe Islands.

While the Faroes have been a member of the European football body UEFA for many years, Greenland last year applied for membership in the CONCACAF.

The Greenland national team can’t compete in official games while they don’t get a membership in a football body and must find different ways to play matches.

On Friday, the Greenland national team played a match against a team from the Danish minority in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. They won 4-3.
