A letter from our publisher: Introducing the Arctic Knowledge Archives
Dear readers,
As I reflect on the years of reporting we’ve accomplished together, I find myself thinking about what it means to build something lasting.
Arctic Today began as a conviction: that the stories shaping the Arctic — its communities, its climate, its geopolitics, its remarkable cultures — deserved the kind of sustained, independent attention that could only come from people who genuinely care about this part of the world. You, our readers, have been the reason we’ve been able to pursue that conviction.
Today, I’m writing to share something new that I firmly believe will help us keep independent Arctic reporting alive and offer you a direct way to be part of it.
We’ve recently launched the Arctic Today Passport, a membership you can support with a monthly or annual pledge. In return, you’ll get a key to the Arctic Knowledge Archives — a living library of our original reporting and in-depth analysis dating back to the beginning of our work. Everything we’ve published on climate change, geopolitics, Indigenous perspectives, economic transformation, Arctic shipping, sustainable travel, and more — available in one place, searchable, and growing every week.
Here’s how it works: all of our current reporting will remain free and open to everyone, just as it always has been, and I believe it should be. Once an article turns a year old, it becomes part of the Archive and available exclusively to Passport supporters.
So nothing changes for the news you rely on today; the Passport simply unlocks our back catalog for those who want to go deeper, while giving Arctic Today a steady source of support to keep doing this work.
The Archive is a resource for anyone who wishes to delve deeper into the Arctic, whether you’re tracing how a story developed over several years, looking into the background behind a current event, or just want to explore our full body of coverage on a particular topic.
This is not a decision we made lightly. Independent journalism, especially journalism focused on a region as complex and consequential as the Arctic, requires a foundation that can sustain it for the long haul.
