The environmental permit for the synthetic methanol production plant designed by P2X Solutions in Joensuu has become legally valid, marking a key milestone for the project.

The Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland granted an environmental permit for the project on December 15, 2025, and no appeals were lodged with the Vaasa Administrative Court within the appeal period. The Joensuu plant is scheduled to produce green hydrogen and further process it into synthetic methanol with an annual capacity of 33,000 tons. The methanol will be produced using carbon dioxide captured from local production facilities, including a Savon Voima power plant.

The heat generated in the process will be utilized in the Joensuu district heating network.

“The legally binding environmental permit is a significant step forward for our Joensuu project. On this basis, it is good to continue preparing the investment decision,” says Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions.

“Synthetic methanol will help the transport and industrial sectors achieve significant emission reductions. We expect demand for Joensuu methanol to come particularly from maritime and air transport,” says Plit.

P2X Solutions is a Finnish company specializing in Power-to-X technologies, producing green hydrogen and synthetic fuels to support the transition to a low-carbon economy. The company focuses on creating sustainable solutions for the energy and chemical industries, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
