🇫🇮 Eight companies are applying for grants for carbon dioxide capture
April 9, 2026
In January, the Ministry launched a call for proposals aimed at promoting the capture of bio-based carbon dioxide in industry through investment grants. A total of 90 million euros is available to support the construction of capture capacity.
The goal of the grant is to promote the implementation and scaling up of the first bio-based carbon dioxide capture solutions to an industrial scale, as well as to accelerate the market-driven advancement of subsequent similar solutions. Grants may be awarded for investments in which the captured carbon dioxide is permanently stored or utilized in products.
“The government wants to promote the advancement of clean solutions and emission-reducing technologies. Finland has significant potential for technical sinks and the utilization of bio-based carbon dioxide in industry. A gratifying number of applications for industrial-scale carbon dioxide capture projects have been submitted. The experience gained from the supported projects will also help facilitate the implementation of future large-scale capture facilities,” says Minister of the Environment and Climate Sari Multala.
Companies that applied for funding:
- FiMeOH Oy, Bio CO₂ -hanke, Salo
- Freija Group Oy, Freija Carbon Capture Project in Naistenlahti, Tampere
- Metsä Fibre Oy, Bio-CO₂ Rauma, Rauma
- Mäntsälän Biovoima Oy, Sinisiipi CCUS, Säkylä
- Nurmon Bioenergia Oy, Nurmon biokaasulaitoksen LCO₂-hanke, Seinäjoki
- Suomen Lantakaasu Oy, Kiuruveden biokaasulaitoksen LCO₂-hanke, Kiuruvesi
- Vantaan Energia Oy, Vantaa Carbon Capture, Vantaa
- VolagHy Kuopio SPV Oy, VolagHy Kuopio CCU Auction, Kuopio
According to the preliminary schedule, the Ministry will make funding decisions this fall.
Projects to be funded must meet the eligibility criteria set forth in the Government Decree (1174/2025) that forms the basis of the funding program. From among the applications that meet these criteria, the projects with the lowest bids will be selected for funding within the limits of the available budget.
Funding will be allocated to projects with a capture capacity of at least 15,000 tons per year. The aim is to allocate support primarily to industrial-scale projects, the experience gained from which will also facilitate the implementation of subsequent large-scale capture facilities. A method for the storage or utilization of the captured carbon dioxide must also be designated.
The grant amount may be up to 30 million euros per supported project. The grant may cover up to 30 percent of the project’s eligible total costs. The grant is paid retrospectively based on the progress of the projects and the actual eligible costs incurred.
The feasibility of the projects must be such that the start of carbon dioxide capture is likely by 2030 at the latest. The carbon dioxide capture capacity must remain in operation until at least the end of 2035.
