🇫🇮 ABO Energy and Orlen agree on hydrogen production
Poland’s largest energy company, Orlen, and ABO Energy signed a letter of intent in Warsaw on January 27, 2026, concerning the production and supply of green hydrogen to Poland from 2030 onwards.
ABO Energy has two hydrogen projects in Finland: the Kurunpuhto hydrogen project in Nivala and the Pyyryväinen project in Oulu. At the same event, Finnish companies Nordic Ren-Gas and VolagHy also signed a similar agreement.
For Orlen, the agreement with its Finnish partners is an important step towards the hydrogen transition and the establishment of supply chains for hydrogen derivatives in Poland.
“The agreements we have signed are an important step towards a Europe-wide hydrogen ecosystem. Through cooperation, we can draw on the expertise, experience, and capabilities of companies operating in Finland. This will ensure a competitively priced supply of hydrogen and secure deliveries to Poland and Central Europe,”
said Marcin Wasilewski, member of Orlen’s management board, in a company press release.
For ABO Energy, the cooperation confirms that there is demand for green hydrogen produced in Finland. It also provides certainty for moving forward with the next stages of Finland’s hydrogen projects.
“At the end of last year, we completed a feasibility study for the Kurunpuhto project. It confirmed the technical and commercial viability of the project and encourages us to move forward with it in a sustainable manner. Next, we will move on to the environmental impact assessment,”
says Oliver Biegel, head of the European Hydrogen Team.
ABO Energy will now start to develop a more detailed concept for the Pyyryväinen hydrogen project in Oulu alongside the Kurunpuhto project. Together, these two projects could produce up to 100,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
Both projects would be implemented in phases, with the first phase in Nivala potentially completed by 2030 and full capacity in both projects reached by 2035.
